Perched high overlooking the Potomac River the Fort Belvoir's Officer Club has one of the best views in all of Northern Virginia.
The Officers Club isn't the only place to enjoy time with Mother Nature on post. In fact Fort Belvoir which is comprised over 8,500 also has over 1,300 acres of dedicated wildlife refuges as part of the base property as well. The largest piece of the refugee established in 1980 is the Accotink Bay Wildlife Refuge on the north post. The trail offers nine miles of walking paths through a variety of wildlife habitat and includes a handicap accessible Pohick Trail.
On the south post of Fort Belvoir is the Jackson Miles Abbott Wetland Refuge. Established in 1988 to protect a local wetland area the refuge is a great spot for local fisherman (with a valid VA fishing license) to cast a line in the pond. With a one mile paved walking trail and places to picnic it makes a great spot to exercise during lunch.
Both of these wildlife areas can be accessed by civilians as well as military families with proper identification and are open dawn until dusk all year. If you have orders to Fort Belvoir and are looking for an agent who knows their way around both inside and outside the gates of the post give me a call. Yvette-the wildlife area on Ft. Belvoir is one of those nice little surprises you don't expect on a military post.
Cynthia-we are fortunate in our area to have so many great parks and recreation spots. Fort Belvoir has proven that you can successful be environmental responsible as well as have a serious mision to support our country.

Gary-the view from the Officers Club at Fort Belvoir is one of the best in the area. The post has done a great job of protecting the wetlands that feed into the local rivers and bays.

Brian and Rita-Yes Burke Va is a great community. Okay I have some great clients named Brian and Rita. There last name starts with a B so I guess you could share monogramed towels :-) Oh and my son lives in Highlands Ranch so I'm sure we somehow could connect all sorts of strange little dots!
Fort Belvoir and the surrounding Mount Vernon is a beautiful place to live in relation to the surrounding Greater D.C. area. I am currently assigned to housing on Fort Belvoir and it's really amazing. The proximity to all the events in our nations capitol combined with natural luster literally in my backyard make the drive to work in the congested traffic really worth it. In my time off I like to wander the trails, hike the nice hills, walk along the river, and of course take pictures of the beautiful scenery. Let me tell you there are more squirrels and groundhogs than you can shake a stick at, and not in a bad way. I've seen a red fox and I think I saw a badger yesterday while running. Plenty of bird species and of course being near the river one night during the summer I found a crawfish(crawdad is what we call them back home) making his way across the road. I have really come to appreciate my assignment here.
Ron-thank you for stopping by and commenting on your experience living at Fort Belvoir. You must be from the further south than Virginia if you say "crawdad":-) Deer are another big part of the Belvoir animal family as I see them on a regular basis as well. I hope you will continue to enjoy your time in our area.
There are some great nature areas inside and around military posts! It's nice to know there are some peaceful areas for military families to camp and have a little quiet time together.
Penny-the trails available on Fort Belvoir and the way they connect to a huge wildlife reserve make it a great opportunity for anyone who just wants to get outside and enjoy some time with mother nature.
