Wordless Sunday-A Message of Hope From Behind The Prison Fence

Lorton Artwork

A view of the full painting on the former DC Reformatory located in Lorton VA.

Former DC Reformatory in Lorton VA

Every once in awhile I get a chance to sneak behind the fences at the former DC Reformatory in Lorton VA.  Helps that I'm a volunteer at the Lorton Workhouse Arts Center which continues to expand on the former prision site.  The artwork created by prisoners can be found both on the exterior of some of the buildings but in some of the former dormitories of the prison as well.

Cindy, Definitely looks like there were some prisoners with talent spending time there.  Hopefully they put their skills to good use when they got out.

Amazing of some of the talent behind those prison walls!  Wow, kind of sad that it was contained for what ever reason.  Glad that you shared that with us and that, that artwork at least will now be seen by many folks!

That is quite a statement for someone who is incarcerated. It may be you if you get caught!

Hi Cindy,

I think it's wonderful this is one of your volunteering activities! The quote is quite inspirational and I love the art work! Hopefully some can get out and make use of their talents productively :).

Bliz-when the prison closed all those who remained were shipped out to other facilites around the US.  It caused quite a stir but VA held DC prisoners for over 100 years.

Brenda-as the continue the re-purposing of the buildings on the site more of the artwork becomes visible to the public.  There were some talented artists incarcerated here.

Deborah fortunately it is no longer a prison so volunteering is a safe activity.  Get to see lots of good shows and work with visiting artists.

Dorie I hope so as well.  This site has a lot of history to it and I've enjoyed getting to be involved as it takes a new positive roll in the community.

Hannah-this prison is now closed and they are re-purposing it into a community arts center.  The art found is being saved as part of the renovations.
