With school system budgets cuts one class often on the chopping block is art. Yet almost any child likes to create. Whether its with it's with a crayon, construction paper and glue or pine cones covered with glitter the look of satisfaction when they are done is priceless. To help keep the creativity going, every month a group of mosaic artists in Northern Virginia spend time creating mosaic pieces to raffle to raise money for scholarships for Military families to attend free workshops at local mosaic studios in Northern Virginia. In addition other local artists are contributing works to be included in future raffles to support the program.
Some of the classes they can choose to attend include a mosaic bootcamp for adults, holiday gift building workshops and summer art camp for kids. The scholarship money pays for course fees and supplies for the class they choose to attend.
The group coordinates with Morale, Welfare & Recreation (MWR) at Fort Belvoir, Fort Meade and Marine Corps Base Quantico to find families who would like to be considered for the scholarships for the free classes. The staff at Maverick Mosaics also coordinates finding families through the My Neighborhood Network.
It's just another way to pay back our local military families as well as have some time creating fun works of art to raffle.
