I generally don't reblog right after a post but Gerry's post is timely. This weekend is the annual wreath laying at Arlington National Cemetery. Come rain, shine or freezing whether I will be participating again along with hundreds of other volunteers.
Arlington Cemetery is just one of hundreds of cemeteries around the country where volunteers will be out remembering not only our loved ones but other men & women who have served.
List of participating Wreaths Across America and you can support the project through your contributions and volunteer time.
National Wreath Project @ Soldiers National Cemetery
More than 150 people arrived and completed the wreath laying at the Soldiers National Cemetery in Gettysburg Pa. The National Wreath Project adorned all 1,620 headstones at the Soldiers National Cemetery in just over an hour. This was the largest crowd that has attended the event in Gettysburg, Pa.
A large crowd was also on hand prior to the event to help put bows on the wreaths for the headstones at the Soldiers National Cemetery, as well as 2,400 additional wreaths that were placed at Quantico. The National Wreath Project will be at the Arlington National Cemetery Sat. Dec 11th, at 8:30am.
This four year old project was started by John & Susan McColley who place a wreath at the grave of thier son Sgt. Eric McColley who was killed in a helicopter accident. They placed a wreath at his grave, and returned a week later to place an additional wreath, they took the original wreath and placed it on the headstone beside Erics. The tradition has been going and growing steadily since.
The wreaths cost about $7.50 each, and as of now the project is behind to the tune of $5,000. If you are interested in helping bridge this years gap, or contributing to next years project contact project National Wreath Project coordinator Stan Clark@ firstname.lastname@example.org.
