Ask Any Marine And They Will Tell You November 10th 1775

Today is the 235th birthday of the United States Marine Corps.  If you ask any Marine they will tell you without hesitation November 10, 1775 is the date of the founding of the United States Marine Corps.

My father-in-law served in WWII and the Korean War.  He landed on the shores of Okinawa as part of the First Marine Infantry Division.  Though he never spoke much of his service to our country he rose through the ranks from a Private to a Lt. Col before retiring.  Years later when my husband (USAF) received orders to report to Kadena AB in Okinawa my father-in-law was visible shaken.  His only memories of the island were the year he spent in battle.  He would never make the trip to visit us in Okinawa and we understood why.

Thank you to all of the US Marine's who have served our country so valiantly and who continue to serve today.

Happy Birthday.

Excellent job Cindy, for a while I re-enacted as a Marine in the civil war, they are visible at re-enactments by their white pants. Nice post....

Cindy, a touching story about your father-in-law. So many veterans don't speak of their memories but are haunted by them. We owe so much to the veterans and military people who have sacrificed for all of us even as they often remain silent about their experiences.

Cindy.....that was a touching story....every video brings tears to my eyes, for sure.....and there are so many military men and women who have seen it all and never talk about it....we have some here in my office and on AR....where would we be now without their dedication and commitment to fight for our democracy??

Deanne-he was a very stoic man and rarely said anything about his long service in the USMC.

Barbara-you are so right.  Without the service of so many we would not celebrate the freedoms we have today.

My dad was a WWII vet as well.  He would tell the stories when he was at the VFW but wasn't as open when he was around home.

Pat-it seems to be the way with many of the WWII veterans.  Stoic might be a good way to describe them.  Thanks to all of them for serving our country.
