Lorton Workhouse Arts Center-Stay Cool & Look at Beautiful Photos at the Same Time

No one will dispute that a heat wave is on in Northern Virginia.  However there is a place to hang out that won't cost you any money and will give you a chance to see wonderful photos by local artists.

The Lorton Workhouse Arts Center 2nd Annual Juried Photographic Competition is underway and on display through August 15th, 2010.  The Lorton Workhouse Arts Center is the crown jewel of the redevelopment of the buildings and land that once were part of the DC Correctional facilty that was located in Lorton VA.

For local artists the center provides a place for studios close to home and for residents a place to enjoy classes, exhibitions, art walks and performances.

If you want to stay cool over the next few weeks then make sure you stop by the Lorton Workhouse Arts Center and take in the photos on display.

Not able to get to here.  No problem the photos are available for you to view right here.

Escaping the heat this weekend is going to be very important. This is a collection of amazing photos. Well worth a visit.

Ellie-I volunteer for events at the center.  Great way to catch the various shows for free.

This is a great idea for anyone local to Lorton for the weekend. It's going to be a scorcher.  Why not enjoy an art exhibit AND A/C?

I am very out of the loop with what is happening in the Lorton/Woodbridge area. I don't think I've even been down there since the prison was torn down.

Chris Ann-I'm going to head over either today or tomorrow.  It might be to hot to even go to the pool this afternoon.

Anne-actually they didn't tear the prison down.  The artists studios and art center are in the original prison buildings.  There are still buildings to be revitilzed but the core group is done.  Now they are working on building artists lofts for resident artists.  How cool is that?

It's amazing what the great photographers can produce. My wife and I studied photography in a local college and art school for several years, and have some books of collections from several great artists.

When Avedon brought his In The Wild West show to the San Francisco Art Museum, we got to see the show and attend his lecture. Naturally we bought his book which he autographed for everyone.

Bill-I always am in awe of great photography.  I can spend hours at shows looking at all of the details.  Of course in today's digital world photographers can change and manipulate images which in some ways might be cheating.
