This morning as an estimator for a local moving company opened drawers and peeked in closets at my clients house it reminded me of a few tips to consider when you are getting ready to move.
The #1 Tip is PURGE. Start with all of those magazines that are lying around. If there is one article that you want to keep out of the entire magazine cut it out and scan it to your computer or a disc. Go through the closets and clean out the clothes, shoes, coats that you know you won't need at your new location or haven't worn in a long time.
#2-SECURE IMPORTANT DOCUMENTS. Make sure all of your important papers are secure in one location. It is amazing the number of times that you will get to your new location and not be able to find immunization records, birth certificates, bank and investment documents. I recommend that you consider making a scanned disc of all of your papers as a backup to the paper files.
#3-PACK AN EMERGENCY KIT. The first night in a new home is usually chaotic. Surrounded by boxes and trying to find that one item you really need is impossible. Pack one box and clearly label it as the EMERGENCY KIT. Inside you need toilet paper, paper towels, trash bags, non perishable snacks, set of sheets and small hardware kit.
Once you know your exact moving date you can start going room by room and organizing items so that when the moving company arrives to pack that you will have like items together and can clearly label each room and the key items in each box.
Now I need to work on Tip #1 at my own house. Even though I'm not moving a peek inside my closets reveals it's time for a purge of my own!

Cindy, thanks for sharing information. Will pass on to our clients. Thanks Again,
Great tips for scanning those articles and important papers. I'd put bandages and Neosporin in that emergency kit too. I am a total clutz on a good day, no less a moving day.
Great tips...I need to work on number one as well! In some ways I think all of us should be forced to move every 4-5 years...one it makes you humble...to know what your clients are going through ...and two....it forces purging! LOL
See, Cindy, if you followed my rule -- don't put anything into the closet without taking something out -- you'd never have to purge your closet. As for moving, most people should simply rent a 20- or 30-ton dumpster and toss crap into it. After donating what they can to charity, of course.
Edward and Celia-most is common sense. However everyone once in a while a reminder is helpful.
Chris Ann-so how does that work with your inline skating?
Deborah-I have a tendency to move every 3-5 years so I'm ready for a purge.
Elizabeth-I did a major purge about 5 years ago. Since then I"ve accumulated things from my mom's estate that I haven't figured out how to deal with yet. Soon though I'll be back to clean closets.
Cindy, I'm moving after 13 years in the same house. Purging is exactly what I'm doing. Yikes. So much @#$%^ stuff. :)
Connie-it is amazing how fast stuff creeps in. I've made a pile off and on over the last few days of expendable items that are off to the Goodwill on Thursday.
Excellent post! Great information's and tips! I will pass them on to our clients!
Thanks for sharing!
Adam
Adam-thank you for stopping by. Have a great evening.
I also like to pack up cleaning supplies in the car, so I can do quick clean before moving furniture into my new home.
Cindy, I think we could all use a little purging in our lives. Especially in garages.
Tina-great idea.
Aaron-in my last detached home I was the only one in the neighborhood that actually had two cars in the garage. Folks keep way to much stuff these days.
