More than 600 museums across the US will be offering to free admission to active duty military and their families this summer as part of Operation Appreciation.
The Blue Star Families and the National Endowment for the Arts partnered to create this opportunity for families to enjoy everything from local children's hands on museums to those that feature art, history and science.
“The Blue Star Museums initiative is a tangible expression of appreciation to service members and their families,“ said Barbara Thompson, director of the Pentagon’s office of family policy."
Each museum will offer free admission to an active duty military member and up to 5 members of their family. Special exhibits within the museum may not be included in the free admission. Families should check with the museum they plan to attend beforehand to make sure they know if there may be charges for those exhibits.
In Northern Virginia some of the free museums and attractions include:
Brentsville Courthouse Historic Centre
Bristow, VA
Carlyle House Historic Park
Alexandria, VA
Gadsby's Tavern Museum
Alexandria, VA
Morven Park
Leesburg, VA
Weems-Botts Museum
Dumfries, VA

Great info, like everyone said. I shall reblog. Hampton Roads have several participating.
Cindy: This sounds like a great idea. Operation Appreciation, and there is one right here in Bristow, VA. I may have to go see it for myself.
Toula-a great opportunity as they travel across the country to a new duty station or even stay close to home to explore local museums.
Charles-a few C'Ville attractions are on the list.
Irene-the more who pass on the information the better.
Hannah-reblog away. We need to get the word out.
Tere-Williamsburg is a popular place and pricey so this will help any military families who want to explore the historic area.
Chris Ann-There are a couple of places on the list that I haven't been to in awhile. Could be a good time to explore.
Cindy this is terrific...I am going to use for a reblog. Thanks!
Debra-thanks and NY has great musueums on the list.
