Remember the Fallen
Honor those who Serve
Teach the Value of Freedom to Our Children
Those words are the mission of the Wreaths Across America Project
Yesterday on a cold Virginia morning thousands of volunteers from across the country arrived in one spot to honor our fallen heros. For the last 18 years the Wreaths Across America project has made sure that soliders buried at Arlington Cemetery are remembered during the holidays.
My spot for laying wreaths was in a quiet section of Arlington Cemetery, Section 60 close to the Columbarium. A contingent of police from Portland Maine were there as well as hundreds of soliders who were honoring their colleagues.
If you want to learn more about the project you can go to Wreath Across America Project.

Cindy, TY for the reminder. Having visited Arlington this past year and seeingthe changing of the guard was one of the most sobering things that I have ever witnessed. Should be a required visit to everyone that claims to be an American!!!
Thanks for sharing. Thanks to all of the workers that placed the wreaths. This is a wonderful annual project.
Hi Cindy:
May our true heroes always be remembered!
Cindy, this is a wonderful group. What a great thing to do for the holidays!
Cindy - Our hereoes should never be forgotten. What a beautiful way to honor them. Many thanks to the Wreaths Across America Project and the many volunteers for honoring our fallen heroes during the holidays.
I will never forget my firrst visit to Arlington. It is a site that no one can ever forget.
I will never forget my firrst visit to Arlington. It is a site that no one can ever forget.
Cindy as always you show that when it comes to supporting the military that you not only talk to the talk but you walk the walk as well. I know how difficult it is for you to make the trip to Arlington Cemetery. Thanks for getting up and out to support the fallen and their families.
Cindy, thanks for a great post, I visit Arlington regualarly but have never taken part in this event. I will be putting this on my calander for next year,
Cindy We both agree there are many programs at national cemeteries that are inspiring and this one is no exception - your photos are beautiful. Thank you for devoting your time in remembrance of our veterans.
Cindy, Thanks for serving those who have give the ultimate sacrifice for our country!
Edward-Arlington National Cemetery is a place that makes you understand the meaning of sacrifice.
Roy-the project has continued to grow and this year is the first time they have asked for contributions to spread the project to more locations across the US.
Toula-thank you for stopping by. Our lives are full of heros and those at Arlington lead the way.
Patricia-it is not one of the things that makes you jump for joy but it is an event where you know that the families of the fallen appreciate their loved ones being remembered.
Donna-it is a priviledge to be able to join in this project close to home. Remembering those who have given their lives is important.
Susan-Arlington takes your breath away. To look across the sea of headstones reminds you that freedom does not come without a price.
Pat-thanks for your comment. I remember everyday what our military members and their families give up whether in war or peace.
Gerry-hopefully I will see you next year. Call anytime you are coming to the area and we can grab a cup of coffee.
Karen-during the holidays it is the least we can do to assist military families and honor the fallen.
Dan-Being able to do this one small thing for a fallen hero is well worth a few hours on a cold morning.
Coming from a military family, these photos bring back a number of memories. My brother and father are too far away for me to pay tribute to their graves.
Kay-Every military family understands the value of sacrifice whether they have lost a loved on or not. Thanks to your family who have served our country as well.
Cindy,
What a great project. Really great pictures, too. I think it's easy to forget how much the military does for us. Sounds like a wonderful way to pay tribute to fallen heroes.
Cindy - Great post about an awesome project.Thank you for your efforts and sharing of this worthwhile event.
Carra-it is just a small token of appreciation for the soliders and their families.
Greg-thanks for stopping by. It isn't the first time I've helped and it won't be the last.
Cindy, I'm re-blogging this post as a follow-up to my re-blog on Simon's post...thanks for the great photos and information! :)
Leilani
Leilani-thank you for the reblog and honoring those who have served.
Good Morning Cindy, and Merry Christmas, thank you for making me aware of this post, I had not seen it originally. I did include the link in my blog, however. Merry Christmas
Ed-thanks for your bring this great project to the attention of more members of Active Rain and the world!
Hi Cindy,
Thanks so much for this, just found your link via Roland's re-post.
Your comments about Arlington are so true, it's been a moving experience as a proud and grateful American...just to experience this place. Thank you for sharing and I clicked on over to your link to sign up, I hope to participate in 2010.
Lynda-the more hands helping to honor our hero's the better. Best to you for 2010.
This is amazing. I re-blogged another post someone wrote that showed the snow on the ground, with the wreaths and bows, and the story behind it all. I can't believe the media doesn't publicize this!
Lisa-it is fairly well publicized event but people often overlook it in the rush of the holidays. I've been participating for years but I also have personal reasons for doing so.
